Caribbean Petroleum Corp. Explosion

OCTOBER 23, 2009

On October 23, 2009 there was a massive explosion at the Caribbean Petroleum Corp, a fuel storage facility just a few miles from our apartment. We were sleeping when it happened, but other classmates who were not said it felt like an earthquake and they could see flames shooting into the sky from miles away. The fires burned for days a left these massive black clouds covering the outskirts of San Juan. This explosion happened while Matt and Sara were here visiting. Above are a few pictures that I took while driving around, and below is a link to an msnbc story about the blast.

--The Good Times--

One of my classmates put this awesome video together and showed it to our class the other day...I almost cried. It shows a little school, a lot of fun, and a ton of great memories from the first half of the adventure that is optometry school.

PS--There are a lot of pictures from the 2 Halloween's that we have celebrated down here, hence all the pictures of people in weird costumes.

**The quality turned out really bad when I uploaded to this site, sorry.

Halloween 2009

October 31, 2009 - Happy Halloween!

For Halloween '09 there was a big party held on the rooftop of one of the Optometry dorm buildings. I swear, they built the dorms with rooftop parties in mind!

Joe and I tend to do things at the last minute (shocker, I know), and Halloween was no exception. We didn't know what we wanted to dress up as, and ended up settling on white-trash Nascar Fans. Our friend Les is a true Nascar fan (and all-around good sport) and he let us wear some of his treasured Dale Jr. t-shirts, even though we teased him that we ere essentially dressing up as him for Halloween. :)

A great time was had by all as I can assure you that our friends and my classmates know how to eat, drink, and be merry. Everyone's costumes were great and we were all looking forward to next Halloween by the time the night was over. Too bad I'm so slow at blogging that Halloween 2010 has already come and gone. That post will come sometime down the line.

Sexy, I know.

Loofa, Elmer's Glue Bottle, Cleopatra, & I

Yep, that's Lil Wayne.

This is the drunk Rubik's Cube (Les) that loaned us the t-shirts for our costumes!

Matt & Sara's Visit!

October 20-26, 2009

Joe, Matt, Sara, and I on Flamenco Beach, Culebra

Joe's sister and brother-in-law, Sara and Matt, visited us in PR for vacation
October 20-26, 2009. I picked a few pictures from their visit to share.

This is Matt holding baby Mac. They showed up just two days after we found him...he didn't even have a name yet!

Culebra Island-Flamenco Beach

We went to the island of Culebra (to the east of PR) one of the days of their trip. We ended up flying home from the island in this little 10 passenger (including pilot) plane. The 10 minute flight sure beat the other option of an hour and 15 minute ferry trip!

The water bottle pictured below is full of ocean water, not bottled water....the water at Flamenco Beach is that clear.

Los Tubos

The next few pictures are from a pretty secluded beach with some huge waves. As you can see from the picture below, Sara is enjoying the sun and sand while Joe and Matt fight the huge waves in the background!
These are little snails

El Yunque National Rain Forest

Here is a view from one of the lookout towers in the rain forest. That is Luquillo in the distance. This is the north-eastern coast of the island.

Random pictures from their trip.....

We love beer towers from Old Harbor Brewery :)

Joe & Matt enjoying a drink

Joe absolutely loves his grandma's apple pies, so she made two of them and Matt and Sara carried them on the airplanes with them all the way to Puerto Rico! Joe is pretty spoiled, I know.

Cute-ness

I'm so far behind with this blog that Willow just turned 2 and these pictures are from when she had just turned 1. She has changed SO much in the past year.

Mac Grew Up

Mac was born at the very end of September 2009, so he is well over a year old now. He is still crazy but definitely cute. :) My little brother would think I'm weird for posting cat pictures! haha
